Born in 1962; he directed his first short film, The Passport, in 1986. Mashharawi immigrated to the Netherlands in 1993, where he resided for 3 years and established with Hani Abu Asaad the Ayloul Films Company, that produced films in cooperation with the Dutch company Arcos Films. He presented his first feature film Curfew in 1993, then his second feature film Haifa in 1996, which was the first Palestinian film to be officially shown at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1996, Mashharawi founded the Film Production Center in Ramallah, through which he produced a number of films, including Rabab (1997), Tension (1998), Behind the Walls (1999), Ghubash (2000), and Season of Love (2000), Upside-down (2000) and From Palestine Live (2001), and his third feature film A Ticket to Jerusalem (2002), then his fourth feature film Waiting and his fifth feature film Laila's Birthday. He received many international awards in international festivals, and participated in the membership and presidency of jury committees in Arab and international festivals.
